2017 Breba

The Green Goliath is a San Pedro Type fig. So it only ripens Brebas. 

Just for grins that's Nolan's Hand.  It's a 77 Gram Green Goliath Fig Breba. The best part is it's not even the largest fig in the garden.

And the last breba on the tree.  I let this one ripen as long as possible. You can see the big difference when the sugars concentrate. This is a the difference of 1 week in ripening stages.

Cut open.

Wow the taste was so much better at this stage of ripening. It was syrupy and mildly sweet. Quite good. Another winner for the PNW.

While we're all out enjoying the 4th of July. My Green Goliath brebas were quietly ripening on the tree.

It get's 2nd place for the earliest breba award. 1st goes to the Tauro this year.

 

This fig looks like it's ripe but we've had a couple very hot days so it could just be wilting a bit. I'm gonna let it sweeten a tad more on the tree.

Nolan was pumped when I told him that we had a ripe fig to eat. (He did a double fist pump and said Yeah!)

This is the smallest one on the tree. There are a couple others about 1.5x bigger still waiting to ripen.

The taste of the Green Goliath is like a honey melon. Balanced sweetness and decent flavor. The fact that it ripens before Desert King is quite enticing. It's my 4th of July fig. So far it has ripened exactly the same time each year. I can't wait to pick the larger ones.

San Pedro type

I rooted this cutting last year in March 2016. So it's only about a yr old. It's put on some beautiful growth.

Hooray it's the 1st fig of the season! After losing so many brebas from many of my trees, this one held on. I'm not quite sure what caused the breba lost but many of the folks around WA also reported the same problem. Could be the record rains we had.  Even my reliable VDB dropped most of it's figs. Well this Green Goliath survived because it was in the greenhouse.

The taste has light melony and figgy tones. Not very sweet. But tasty. It probably could have used another day to get to optimal ripeness. Considering it's only a year old it should only get better with age.

Sorry for the oily photos my camera phone broke during a laser tag event. I attained this cutting in March 2016 from cuttings. It has done well in the Target self watering pots. Looks like I'll be lucky to get a breba this year. The reason why I got this variety was because of the ginormous fruits it produces.

I can't wait!

3/4/16 The Green Goliath (Zöld Óriás)

These just arrived in the mail today 4 cuttings of the Green Goliath Fig. I'm sure they have a real name and I intend to find out sooner or later.

I bought it because I love giant figs. And at 195 grams I don't think they get much bigger than this.
Check out these photos from the owner of this fig. Aren't they amazing!?

All bagged up and ready to go. I bought some uline 4x10 bags which work perfectly for new cuttings it also has an adhesive top for an easy seal.

Three weeks in and the roots have formed.
